HRT Pre-Payment Certificate

From the 1 April, the Government is launching the HRT Pre-Payment Certificate (PPC) to reduce prescription costs for women receiving Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).

The HRT PPC will be available to buy in one single payment online at www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/hrt-ppc, or in-person at some pharmacies. You can call 0300 330 2089 for help and support.

Before buying an HRT PPC, you should check if:

Medication reviews

Patients on repeat medication will need to have a medication review at least once a year. This will be achieved in one of 2 ways:

  1. Long Term Condition Review – After having your annual tests in your birth month +/- nurse review, you will be booked with the Clinical Pharmacist who will either be able to remotely reauthorise your medication, if appropriate, or may need to speak with you
  2. Regular Medication outside of the ‘Long Term Condition Review’ – Where possible, we will try and align your review dates to your birth month, or as appropriate, depending on the medication. Our Clinical Pharmacist will either be able to remotely reauthorise your medication, if appropriate, or may need to speak with you, either via a questionnaire/ online form or directly depending on preferences or any issues.

Please ensure you book an appropriate appointment, if and when prompted, to avoid unnecessary delays to further prescriptions.

Prescription charges

These charges apply in England only.   In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.

  • Prescription (per item): £9.65
  • 3-month PPC: £31.25
  • 12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £111.60

If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months, or more than 15 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC.

What to do with old medicines

Take it to the pharmacy you got it from or bring it in to the surgery. Do not put it in your household bin or flush it down the toilet.

About pharmacists

As qualified healthcare professionals, pharmacists can offer advice on minor illnesses such as:

  • coughs
  • colds
  • sore throats
  • tummy trouble
  • aches and pains

They can also advise on medicine that you can buy without a prescription.

Many pharmacies are open until late and at weekends. You do not need an appointment.

Most pharmacies have a private consultation room where you can discuss issues with pharmacy staff without being overheard.
